Nurturing the Lives of Children

York Place Episcopal Church Home for Children, established in 1850, is a nationally accredited, not for profit, residential treatment center offering a haven of healing and hope to children with severe emotional problems. The 120-acre campus has facilities to treat 48 children, males and females, ages 9-16 for an anticipated length of stay from 45-90 days per student. York Place offers the children medical, psychological, psychiatric, recreational, and religious services and activities.

God, through Christ, calls York Place a ministry of the Episcopal Church, to guide children and families toward spiritual and emotional wholeness. The support of caring individuals, such as you, ensures the success of this complex, yet tender ministry.

With a $5 million annual budget, York Place relies on fees-for-services payments from the State of South Carolina along with the generous received each year from churches, individual donors, and corporate gifts. These private gifts account for 20 percent of its annual support.

The York Place Volunteer Program is very beneficial for these special children who often have so little love and care, and are on the threshold of life. There are many opportunities the future to make the future better and brighter for the children at York Place, including:

  • Mission teams of adults and youth from churches to share quality time with the children through recreational and religious activities.
  • "Friends for Kids" being a special friend or a mentor to a child.
  • Working in the library.
  • Working in the "Kids Kloset" (Clothing for Children).
  • Christmas Store Donations where you can donate new or gently used items. The children earn "Christmas Store Dollars" through a point system to buy gifts for family and loved ones. The children would not otherwise be able to give gifts at Christmas and truly see it is better to give than to receive.
  • Special events and fund raisers.
  • Cultural activities.
  • Sharing your talents by giving lessons, e.g., piano, voice, dance, art etc. to children with special interests and talents.
  • Administrative assistance.
  • Volunteer newsletter.
  • Tutoring.
  • Keeping volunteer scrapbook.
